Air vent fallen off outside wall

Hi, an air vent cover from one of our Extractor fans has blown off in the recent wind and we’ve noticed pigeons flying in and out of the hole. We live in a town house and this vent was above the bathroom on the 1st floor so it’s too high for us to get to or reach from the window itself. Do you think we need to call pest control to make sure they’re not nesting in there and secondly which tradesman Category would this fall in to? Thanks Update - thank you everyone, there was no nest in there and a new vent has now been attached.

Hi a handyman should be able to install a new vent grill from inside. It’s advisable to cut a round grill and install from inside. Need to be sealed with clear silicone.

It’s entirely up to you but I would personally get pest control out just to make sure. They would probably be able to install A new vent cover for you at the same time. If not, then it would be a general handy man job.

Someone needs a ladder to check the outside of the vent to if there is a nest inside. If not then make sure the hole is cleaned out and then re-use the old vent and seal with silicone. If old vent is broken then replace with a new one the same size.

Hi, if you have an open cavity it’s advisable to get this seen to ASAP. Presuming your internal extractor is still cited and functioning correctly it would be doubtful if birds would nest there due to disturbance. As mentioned before any property maintenance or handy person service should be able to advise and install a new cover. If you have concerns that your extractor is no longer functioning Contact an approved electrician for replacement who can also fit a new external cover for you.
