several Hairline cracks after chimney removal

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.29 PM

Hi all, I have recently got my chimney removed from the living room and 2 bedrooms and the whole house re skimmed in march. And now I'm about to decorate the house and noticed that there are a lot of hairline cracks especially lee.on the wall all in the living room where the chimney was removed there are literally about good 10-15 hairline cracks. the plaster was dried in normal temperature no heating was used that's why I'm confused that it can't be be the plaster dried out quick. Some cracks sounds hollow at the back when you tap on the wall. I have filled majority of them with polyfilla but every 3 to 4 days new cracks are appearing. I just finished decorating two rooms and now I can see the cracks appearing in those rooms as well so I would like to know if this is normal or should I wait a little bit more for the plaster to settle down. Thanks in advance

Agree with the other reply doesn't seem like the walls were primed properly or the walls were defective and the hollow areas not taken back to solid and bonded out before re skim the cracks won't go away just get worse over time

If you have had a chimney removed on all floors it could be settlement cracks as a chimney is a structural part of the house it will take time to settle and cracks will appear on your newly plastered walls. If it is settlement I would leave it longer and see if the cracks get bigger or you can screw a bit of glass or plastic to your wall and see if it cracks the glass or plastic. Once the settlement has settled I would advise you get the patching done. Hope this helps Many thanks Rick and Abi

It sounds like the plaster hasn’t keyed on to the walls. Plasterers have probably used pva, not always good on certain walls with low suction. If low suction on walls, should use blue grit or thistle bond-it.
