Interior Eggshell oil-based paint over water-based emulsion?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.29 PM
I'm redecorating on a budget and was given some water-based paint for an accent wall, the colour of which I like more than the other walls which are in water-based matt magnolia. I've now been given a 5 liter drum of an oil based eggshell paint similar to the accent wall colour. Can I repaint the whole room with the oil based eggshell paint, and if so, what do I need to do? It's a bedroom and the accent paints are 'greenback' and 'stone green'. The magnolia and greenback existing paints are 2 coats and were done this week.

Don’t put oil based paint on walls , oil based paint is for wood or metal, read instructions on the tin, it’s not “just paint” , walls need to breath. Putting it right will be a nightmare = big cost .

You need to sand down the walls, and stabalize with oil based, leaving for 24 hours then you can paint the walls 2 coats, thanks Paul

Yes you can you have to Thin it down with white spirits 5% and painted 2 coats wear a mask. Mind it is not a Matt it dries with a slight Sheen. It’s a Ford durable washable paint. The smell of the paint goes within about four hours leave your windows and doors Open if possible. Regards Ajm.

I wouldn't use oil based paint on the walls, it'll take forever to dry and stink your house out. Go to B&Q and and have them make up the same colour in a masonry water-based emulsion.
