Central Heating

LPG or Oil (house has 3 storage heaters connected to a back boiler)

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.29 PM

Hi, This isn't a straight forward one and was looking for advice on the decision of going for Oil or LPG Central Heating. Background:- The house is a small 2 bed bungalow, there is no Gas Mains in the area. It's currently running on Economy 7 heating, with storage heaters throughout the house. 3 of the storage heaters (living room, hallway and kitchen) are connected and heated by a back boiler behind the multi-fuel burner in the living room. From what I've read, Oil will save me money annually with LPG being more expensive, but an LPG installation (combi boiler) would be much cheaper to start with. What I'm wondering is if it would make more sense to go for an LPG Combi for the hot water and the bedroom heaters, and keep the back boiler connected to the storage heaters in the living room, kitchen and hallway? Would this end up a cheaper, more efficient way of doing things in the long run? Or, would I be better off getting rid of the back boiler and all storage heaters, and going full Oil conversion? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Oil and Gas are subject to price fluctuations and you need to have storage tanks fitted which need refilling. In a relatively small house I would consider an electric boiler or heatstore which can be heated on cheap off peak electricity. You will still be able to have mains pressure hot water and wet conventional central heating. Relatively cheap installation though you will possibly need the consumer unit and the incoming mains improved to 100amp

I agree with my colleague above makes sense. Although the oil prices are low at the moment but in the long run it will be more expensive

I agree with my colleagues too. However, you do need to look at where you are going to store your oil tank or LPG cylinders? Both will need refilling or replacing and both require particular installation.

If you are looking to invest in the long term for property I would recommend one system for all the house, as it future proofs the property. You don't want to put a LPG combi in and then have to spend more money having to upgrade later on which could cost equally as much as the install. If you go LPG because of the cheaper installation cost, then I recommend also investing in the insulation of the property, as retaining the heat is half the battle and will save of bills. You could also consider Renewable? Air Source Heat Pumps coupled with UFH are extremely efficient and you can receive grants from RHI.
