Cabbage Smell behind kitchen units

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.49 PM

I have had a smell that I can only describe as cabbage. I've had it since the beginning of the year and some days its worse than others. It is coming up from the back of my kitchen units but I believe that's just where the smell collects and its coming from the wall/floor . Its hard to see anything as I have units along the whole wall and a tiled floor. I have removed the kick board and no obvious signs of damp. Its a shared wall with my neighbour and they had an extension built onto the wall about 6months ago. They have had all there plumbing work double checked when I first started smelling it. Just to confuse matters I did have a rodent problem in this exact same area, there is small hole in the concrete wall under the kickboard. I know a lot of people will say its a dead rodent smell but having experienced the dead rodent smell they are different smells! The rodent issue is now sorted but on sorting that out we did find old drainage pipes that had not been capped properly under my extension. they were not connected and were dry and have now been capped. My instincts are telling me there is damp or leak somewhere under the kitchen floor and that is what I can smell but without pulling out all my kitchen units is there any way of telling? I really hope someone has experienced something similar and can give me advice? If I need a tradesperson should I start with a plumber or a kitchen fitter/builder? Many Thanks

I would suggest you contact a plumber with experience in leak tracing preferably one that can use thermal imaging to track trace and find any leaks that may be behind the units/wall.

What id do jnd37, is buy a flue extension kit. Make sure the boiler is turned off, and then fit the diversion kit so the flue pipe is directed away from your window. Just be sure to check with the council that it’s safe where your positioning it. Or my best advice get a plumber to do it for you thanks Neil

You could make sure no appliances are running and then look at the water meter and see if the meter is moving , obviously only works if you have a water meter.
