Add more 7x2 timber beams between existing 7x2 timber binders in loft to raise joist height

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.49 PM

I have an end-terrace house with a pitched/hipped roof - collar type framework, 100mm/4×2 loft joists running from the front to the back, two 7x2 timber binders spaced 3600mm apart from each other sit on the 4x2 loft joists, between these binders is the loft hatch and middle third of my house. I am considering raising the loft floor level with 7x2 (to match binders height) or 8x2 (to clear binders) to board the middle third of the loft and benefit from the unsquashed insulation above the existing joists. Any advice on the best way to do this with timber beams, instead of loft legs? Can joist hangers be secured to the binders or should the beams be evenly spaced and parallel to the binders with struts at intervals?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. I would add noggins between the roof trusses and then remove the binders. This will give you more ceiling height, use less timber and not add weight to your floor joists. However, depending on the span, you might want to beef up the joists as 4"x2" is OK for a ceiling joist but probably insufficient for a floor joist. You can either run a deeper joist parallel and fixed into the existing joists or increase the number of 4 x 2" joists. Calculations for this would be helpful. Good luck. Tom
