Bricklaying & Repointing

Sealing rendered garden/yard wall

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.49 PM

I had a yard wall rendered years ago. The top edging bricks were removed, render applied, metal beading added to the top of wall and new brick top stones laid. There are now have cracks in the rendering. I've been advised that the metal beading was not sealed and water has got behind the render. Can this be remedied without removing the render? Most of the cracks are fine but some have weeds growing from them and there's lots of weeds growing along the beading. The rendering isn't loose.

When the beading was put on it should’ve been stainless steel beading or plastic beading what has happened the beads and nail rusting which will cause gaps the solution is to take the beads off put the appropriate beads on re-render if the cracks are not live cut out of 50 mil gap round the sides about all of themPVA and re-render the wall where required

No unfortunately once the bond has broken and moister has got in and weeds have started to grow along with the rusting beed it won’t belong before you will be patching up her and there every twelve months or so ( only if done Properly) Save your self money in the long run and re do the hole wall .

You will need to strip damaged render and replace the galvanised beads with stainless steel You will find the old beads have perished Sorry but theres no easy fix that will last for this problem Kind regards Mark

To be honest i would say you would be better off removeing the render and re doing it as it will blow . You can buy a spraybto coat tge wall that would stop water penatration which does work to an exctent .

From what you have said and without looking, that is possible or the render has just cracked ?. What type of brick was used on the brick on edge course, is it a porous brick ?. Possibly you could mastic the cracks and coat the wall in a waterproof sealant and see how it goes
