Sewage smell in hallway and in evenings
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.48 PM
I bought a flat in a 1900 house (the house is separated in 2 flats only and I am in the ground floor flat). I have recently noticed a sewage type of smell in the hallway only and in the evening only for the past few days. The smell is always gone by the morning. Any idea of what could cause that and anyway to investigate that does not require to ripe for the flooring off? Many thanks

Would need further investigation. Is there a soil stack running outside near to the hallway? Can you see inlet above entering the property? Are you aware if there is a bathroom above the hallway or near too? Likely a soil pipe has failed. If not it may be worth contacting your local service provider in case you have a leak under the property do you have access drains front or rear?

Hi,
Call a drain specialist, they should have sufficient camera survey equipment if you do call a specialist.
Strange that it only smells at night.
Best of luck

late afternoon people come home start to use bath basins showers etc,it could be poor plumbing design ,traps siphoning out letting smells into rooms,as you use your sink bath basin etc you refill traps stopping smells .

I agree with the original answer but from experience its normally due to space saving waste pipes with out traps in kitchens and fitted by carpenters/builders and not plumbers
Also could be a unused shower tray where the trap has dried out
If there was a issue with the sewer the smell would be constant
