Insulation

sound proofing ceiling of room

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.48 PM

I have a new side extension built but sound travels unlike other rooms in the house. I wish to soundproof it but would like to know what best to use. The builder we have doing rear extension has recommended fire rated plaster boarding the roof for soundproofing but when i search for soundproofing i only find sound proof acoustic insulation. Is there a recommendation for soundproofing as the fire rated plaster-boarding will cost 1800 to install plus skim and paint. Room is 4.3 by 3.9m so wondering how price compares to floorboards and adding acoustics insulation from above.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi you can get a fire rated and acoustic plaster board which does both jobs in one slightly more expensive but saves on labour . Hope this helps .

Hi, Your after Sound shield or Sound bloc plasterboard. Preferably 15mm thick or 2 layers of 12mm. I take it the room is already plastered, so you will probably need an acoustic system. Resilient bar with plasterboard as mentioned. Or mf frame the plasterboard as mentioned. If it’s coming through wall you will require a Gypframe or similar system. Insulation should be acoustic and less Is more when tackling sound. Do not pack it in. Sounds can travel through packed insulation.. That maybe the problem to start with. Hope this helps. 1800 is way way to much for the room size should come in at under 1000 for fire rated boards skim and paint

Is it sound getting to other rooms that’s the problem or sound reverberating around the room? If it’s travelling to other rooms install an acoustic barrier above the walls it travels over then soundbloc plasterboard to the ceiling. If it’s reverberating in the room then there are specialist plasterboards (gyptone) that allow the sound to pass through the boards into the void above. Either way when it comes to acoustics there are lots of possibilities and solutions available.
