Bricklaying & Repointing

How deep should my footing be and how wide?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.31 PM

Hello ladies and gents, first time building a wall so need some advise. I'm adding 2 course of dense blocks above ground for a chicken coop im moving over to another part of garden. Replacing the old area witha 8x8 wood shed. The new chicken coop location is just temporary untill i have to time to pick a proper coop. Dimention of the dense blocks Height: 215 mm Length: 440 mm Width: 100 mm I was about to lay the first motar bed on the soil (10mm) and than the lay blocks but after researching I found that a need a foundation (footing) but I'm not sure how deep and wide i should make , or am I okay to lay motar directly on the soil without a footing? Material wise I think i have sharp sand theres a pile of sand in the cornor from the old tentents and 1x Blue circle mastercrete can't get hold of any building samd and in the area. P.s i need the total wall hight to be 17 inch. the only weight it would be taken is some wired mesh and one 8x4 0.9 metal sheet. The block's would have 2 wood post to the side of them and wood baton on top of the block's to attach the wire mesh. Should I buy a bag of tarmac balllast and than use the blue circle mastercrete motar on top and create the concrete surface?

There isn’t too much weight on it . Dig down forming a trench foundation approx300 mm, this allows concrete of about 125 mm thick with some under build. Then build your base to required height. If you decided to build a full block building, I would dig down at least 600 mm with a concrete foundation ( reinforced with mesh)and at least 150 thick.

It’s always best to go a little deeper because the situation might change, you may want to add courses to your wall and maybe a flat roof. If adding a roof you should bear in mind ‘snow load’ . A heavy snowfall will add weight to the structure. A gallon of water weighs 10 pound. Just an example for making the foundation deeper, I would put 450 mm of concrete.

Hello there . The foundation, should be 300mm wide and 100mm thick. Rule of thumb for foundations . It should be as deep as the thickness of the wall ( ie 100mm block , concrete 100mm deep. Three times the width of the wall ( ie 100mm block , foundation 300mm wide. I hope this helps👍
