Can you render over pebble dash?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.31 PM

The whole of the exterior of my house is covered in pebble dash. Can you render over that or does it need to be removed first? What’s the best/easiest way?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would remove the old pebble dash, as it may be blown in places and would effect any new render, unless you're actually putting external insulation on the walls which can be rendered over

You can render over pebble dash.. as long as the pepple dash is in good condition.. you can remove the loose pebbles and any cracked or blown areas . You can then apply a primer and let that dry for 12 -15 hrs before apply a one coat dash cover up to 20mm and then a tight coat of silicone render

Hi, glad to hear you intend to render over pebble dash, its had its day. Yes is the short answer but the most important consideration is making sure that the pebble dash has been prepared to provide a proper key for the render to adhere to. If your pebble dash has been painted and is loose itself it should be sandblasted or wire brushed off. A cement splatter coat will help.

YES that's a fair answer, I would just like to add that's it really does depend on the condition of the dash. I would advise total removal of pebble dash before insulating as this removes toxins, contaminants and algae spores even though condition of the PD may seem reasonable. EWI is unstable and prone to thermal and existential movement having it put on a base that may deteriorate behind it is not considered best practice.
