Painting over previously wallpapered walls

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.31 PM

I have stripped all the old wallpaper off and will scrub the walls with sugar soap to try get off any remaining paste what is the best way to seal the wall so the water in the paint doesn’t reactivate the paste if I miss any have seen online that an oil based primer may be best but looking for professional advice thanks.

The best product these days is Zinsser Guardz. It's specifically designed to seal in any paste residue and give you a good primed wall to paint. You should be able to get it online and a small tin goes quite a long way.

I have painted over many stripped walls, and after washing down and sanding if required, I have never had a problem applying good quality emulsion without any other preparation. The first coat may possibly reactivate paste residue, but once fully dry a second coat will be fine. If the wall is a strong contrasting colour, a base coat of matt white may be a good idea if the finished colour is much lighter.
