External Render to Paint
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.31 PM
Hi all, I have some walls that have been rendered in my garden, its been 6 weeks or so so i want to paint them myself, do I apply a 'mist coat' and if so is it watered down internal paint or masonry paint, and then which paint would you recommend to topcoat? Thanks!
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Catherine
A good question and one that will probably have a few different solutions.
To be practical about this I would apply a watered down masonry paint to seal the wall render. It is not an exact science but around 30 to 50% water for the first coat. Remember this will be very 'runny' so be careful not to water all your lovely shrubs with the paint!!
Use a good 9 inch roller with a thick pile/nap.
Leave the first coat to dry.
The second coat should be the full masonry paint and this should be adequate for the wall. You could always give it another coat if required but this should not really be necessary.
To keep the wall fresh every couple of years you could give the wall another coat. This is always good for the soul in Spring.
There are many good masonry paints on the market and it is advisable to select a good brand name and ensure it is trade quality.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi Catherine,
I always first of all make sure aply 2 coats of a good stabilising primer exterior and then 3 coats of weather shield exterior masonry paint. You can check in my profile, i have some pictures of exterior jobs. If you do that way will be verry neat and solid.
Thanks a lot
