Electrical supply from house to summerhouse
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.56 PM
Hi just had a summerhouse built and need power from house for light and a few double sockets.can the electric cable be above ground as I have abit of grass then solid concrete to house so abit awkward digging a trench .I'm not electrical minded at all and was wondering if it would need to go to consumer unit or a nearer electrical supply ie..plug sockets .I will be using a qualified sparky but any advice would be great cheers

You can use steel wire armoured cable. You can clip the cable down to the summerhouse if you can't dig a tench.
Your electrician should take the SWA back to the consumer unit and put the summer house on its own designated circuit.

You Would need to install a fused connection unit from a socket ( provided that the socket in question has been correctly installed and RCD protection is in place, if no RCD at consumer unit, the fused connection unit would have to be an RCD fused connection unit) to which the SWA would then be connected to the summerhouse.

Hi.
Armoured cable (SWA) is fine above ground provided it is clipped to a wall or fence.
It is possible for this supply to be ‘spurred’ from a socket inside the house. There are however, various limitations and considerations. RCD protection would be necessary also.
I hope that helps.
