footing depths in garden walls
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.56 PM
im building a 1500mm to 1800mm double 300mm block wall around my garden. the walls will go three sides totalling approx 43m (1 at 20m, 1 at 12m, and 1 at 11m) Im on about digging footings at 500mm deep and 500mm wide to allow for a 300mm wall. also going to fill the cavity with concrete to sink some fence posts in the cavity so i can put a small fence above. is this footing big enough and expansion joints every 8m ok anythink i have missed or any recomendations cheers

The expansion joints for a block wall regarding regulations should be on every 6 meters and avoid putting an expansion joint close to a corner, about the foundation my opinion is that is necessary to be observed prior to make a decision because for different types of soil the required depth is different. as long as you dig until reaching hardcore the depth is enough and in some types of soil that might reach 0.75m.

For a garden wall 450to 500 mm it’s more than enough width and depth if the ground is solid
You might have to go dipper if there are trees nearby

I would at least go 1000mm deep with the footing and 450mm wide, also expansion joints should be no more than 6m intervals.
