2 gang light switch interference with adjacent room lights

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.55 PM

I have unscrewed a 2 gang light switch during repainting of my living room. I noticed that one of the black wires had come off and I put it back to where I thought it should be (L2, right switch on the diagram). The lights are now working, however, one of the switches is now interfering with the light in the adjacent room that will not turn on when one of the switches is on. I examined the wiring more carefully and used a tester to check which ones are live. I found only one live (red) cable that was connected to both COM ports. The second red was connected to the L1 port and is not live. I am obviously missing something here, but I can't figure it out. A sketch of the switch wiring can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mh6vrYMYIu27GVLVawMl_QXued3-j0RZ/view?usp=sharing Update: 27 April 2020. Thank you all for your answers. I tried swapping to the next L2 or swapping L1s without result. This is not a 2 way switch. it is a 2-gang switch with two separate rocker switches that activate 3 and 1 bulbs respectively in my living room. I never expected that its function would interfere with the next room's light. It looks to me that someone has wired a new light using power from this switch. Update: 28 April 2020. Still no luck. I have created a video that shows the wiring and how the switch interferes with the light in the adjacent room. Once the lockdown is over, I will call an electrician to solve this puzzle! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea8A9QTxA40&feature=youtu.be

Hi, According to the diagram black wires supposed to be connected to the other switch L2, I mean right one not left one and also whenever it happened you can find the broken conductor in the switch screws as well to minimize the risk for future also it would be better if you uploaded 2 pics of 2 way switches so any electrician could guide you better by looking real colours. Try it i am pretty sure it should work as i have seen some electrician do wiring this way instead of using 3core & earth cable separately. 1) red wire is Live for Both circuits 2) black wire paired with Live Red is for first light 3) rest of both Black and Red should not be live and both work as two-way conductors while switching so they supposed to be connected with L1 and L2.

As yr saying it's not a two way. I'd say take the black out of L2 and put it in L1 on the other switch. Then take the red out of L1 Then put the red in common. Thinking it may be a loop feed. If not u may av to call an electrician to test each switch wire from each light. I'm presuming the link between the commons were already there!

Is it a 2 way switch? By which I mean can you turn on either of lights by more than switch like your landing light ? I would try and take the black that you found out as this could be a neutral
