Odd Smell in room after decorating

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.55 PM

Bedroom - one wall stripped of paper believe painter sanded the wall a little, then all four walls painted with dulux Matt paints two versions of purple made up in store to selected colours. All done in just over 5-6 hrs. Ceiling painted with trade White paint. Room aired and air purifier used. Still a smell in the room 5 months on, almost feels as though fine particles in the air. Any ideas why and what it could be? Have cleaned the carpet, hoovered, dusted the walls, washed windows, cleaned radiator, kept windows and door open cannot get rid of smell. New wood furniture and curtains in the room. At my wits end as young daughters room. Have had to move her back into the room but worried if this could be damaging her health.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

could be a phycological thing with the client. alternatively the paint or paint base that had been purchased from the supplier has been sitting around and has expired. (white paint is normally stockpiled)

depends of type of smell - mouldy smell could come from underneath wallpaper that is painted over or behind skirting if there is any gaps between wall and skirting, also could be underneath the carpet under radiator. smell the room around and try to identify exact place smell coming from and go from there. hope that will help

Certainly the most likely cause is the paint. Old paint can have a very unpleasant smell like mild urine. A high street DIY retailer in the not too distant past had to recall their water based magnolia as purchasers were reporting this 'urine' smell. Best to clear the walls and ceiling with a sugar soap solution and repaint all of the surfaces. Hope this helps and good luck
