Preparing Masonry Window Sill

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.09 PM

I'm planning on painting my rather weathered masonry window sills at the weekend. Does the below workflow seem okay or overkill? Also wondering if anyone was aware of any issues that may arise in using these products in combination with one another. - Scrape and brush old paint away - Clean with Wickes Fungicidal wash - Brush on Wickes Masonry Stabilising Solution - Prime coat with Zinsser 3-2-1 - Top coat of Dulux Trade Weathershield Textured Masonry Paint The sills are in varying condition but nothing terrible, most of the previous paint had flaked off so hoping stripping the remaining stuff wont be hard. Wasn't planning on any filling as it doesn't look like it needs it. If anyone can offer any advice on if this mix of products would get a good finish it would be massively appreciated.

i would add to your list wire brush and a slurry primer (ultra pro prime) and you have the rest.

To some extent the type of masonry you have is important. With something plain & solid like a window cill, the preparation and products you have selected are fine. However with older more decorative features, often made with limestone, better to use a breathable paint, such as Kiem mineralised masonry paint & primer, otherwise the sealing effect of the paint damages the surface over time.

What you are doing would be fine but I’d go with an weather shield undercoat but with out seeing it It’s hard to say .but if the windowsill is limestone you would be better getting a breathable Masonry paint .
