SLOW LEAK - Mains Water inlet to HW tank

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.09 PM

Hi - I’m hoping someone is able to help me. I have noticed a slow leak coming from the what I believe to be the mains water feed to the hot water tank. The tank is in an upstairs airing cupboard and the mains water pipe comes up through the floor with a tap to close it off. Just underneath the inlet point at which it enters the hot water tank, there is a spout fitting and this is where there is a very slow leak. The leak isn’t constant and I’m sure it only drips during and for some time after the hot water tank is filling, which makes sense. I can’t work out how to stop this though so any help would be appreciated. I’m sure it is probably a simple fix too, I just don’t know where to start! ADDITIONAL INFO REQUESTED: Hot water tank in a Range Trubune EuP unvented, installed in 2016. Colour is white. Yesterday ran a bath and the jug I have to catch the leak filled a lot quicker, so indicating that the leak is happening when the tank is filling up from the mains. Thanks, Jack.

I would to say you have found where and how the leak occurred. It is a good quality cylinder. The Sprout sounds like drain cock. Try Fasten but not too much to damage it and please ask a plumber for help if it still leak. Hope it could help you. Cheers Yongquan Hu

Because the cylinder is unvented you should not work on it yourself. Only a registered unvented engineer can repair. Not many people understand that if repaired or installed incorrectly you have a potential bomb within your property. You may also find that if you try to repair yourself and the leak gets worse and causes damage to your property you home insurance is void. Unvented cylinders must by law only be worked on by registered engineers. Hope this helps

Hi, This sounds like it’s the pressure relief that is passing and going into the Tundish ( spout, this is a black plastic fitting called a tundish and is there to make you aware of any problems ). This definitely needs a G3 qualified engineer to have a look a see what the problem is, could be simply passing or it could be overpressurised. Could also be the expansion vessel need to be re pressurised.
