Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.09 PM

Hi I have a old oven wired in 6mm cable, but the new oven can be plugged in .with no socket close . Can a single socket or a switched spur be connected to the 6mm cable and switched form cooker switch !

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The existing 6mm cables connected to your old cooker can be used as long as the new oven meets the KW demand for the cable. Most probably you're be fine with the 6mm cable. The existing 6mm cable can be terminated into a 45Amp connection unit behind the oven then your new oven plug can be terminated safely into the connection unit. Your original cooker isolator should work as per normal. I would suggest to employ a competent electrician to carry out these works to make sure all terminations are safe and correct with no risk of fire or electrocution. Hope this helps. Thanks Alfie

It’s likely that the original cooker circuit was on a 32 amp fuse or mcb which might be to high for the cable connected to the cooker. If the cooker came with a plug just put a socket on the end of the 6mm cable plug in job done.

WHY NOT REPLACE THE COOKER CONNECTION UNIT WITH A SWITCHED SOCKET . AND JUST PLUG IN, THEN YOU HAVE THE FUSED PLUG IN USE . AS PER THE MANUFACTURERS PROVIDE

The oven has a pre wired 13a plug so if you change the existing cooker connection unit for a 13a plug socket you will be providing the protection the oven requires. By following the advice of the other person you will be removing the manufactures protection and thus invalidating the warranty. If unsure get an qualified electrician in to install the oven
