Single skin garage to double skin

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.08 PM

We currently have a single skin garage but are wanting this to eventually be converted into a kitchen/diner with a master bedroom above. As it is a single skin I was wondering how we would be able to make this double skin. Would we have to knock down the entire garage and start a fresh or is there any other ways.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

the best way to second skin a single wall, ie garage would be to install 1 x course of inner bricks onto the existing garage floor creating a 4" cavity, DPC, 4" studwork, vapour barrier, celotex insulation. The garage floor will then need to be self levelled flat, DPM applied, and then celotex insulation. flooring to be 22mm moisture back, this creates an insulated floating floor. To finish walls to be covered in foil back plasterboard.. Basically your creating a room within a room

Hi it's quite a common question depending on the foundations probably not to be able to build a internal skin from stud work and insulate to the building control regulations. I doubt it very much if you had to to rebuild it completely I've never done in my whole time working but you do lose some space inside that's the only downfall.

No need to knock down just insulate and build a dry wall on top of existing.
