Fencing

Additional protection fence post

Hi guys, with all this spare time I've decided to do the fencing in my garden, have bought treated wooden posts (prefer the look) and have thought maybe using some creosote or bitumen paint (or both?) on the 2ft I'm going to bury and set in concrete and extending maybe 6" up to prevent ground line rot, my question is, would you use one/both/neither? Want to make it as long lasting as possible and do I apply to the 4x4 very bottom that will sit on hardcore, thanks a lot in advance 👍🏻

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there. Dipping in bitumen would do the job. But once your encased it concrete they then tend to rot at the ground level if the concrete is below the soil surface. I like to try shape the concrete like a cone shape, this lets water shed off into the soil rather than pool underneath ground level causing the ingress and..15year later rotting. Hope this helps.

I would suggest using postsavers... cheap, easy to fit and you don’t have to wait for any drying time. I have used them on plenty of wooden post, no trouble at all and they protect the post at ground level. They also come with a 20yr guarantee, however eventually wood will Rot regardless. This is their website, you can also download an app to show installation, but to be honest, they are very straight forward https://www.postsaver.com/

If you want to do a really good long term job, use a plastic cover on the post below ground or even use a piece of plastic drainage pipe to sit the post into. Hope this helps.
