Bricklaying & Repointing

Mixing bricks and blocks

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.08 PM

Hi all. I'm building a single story extension with a warm flat roof and parepet walls under permitted development. In order for me to have the same height ceiling as my living room I'll need to raise the inside blockwork up by roughly 65mm to sit the ceiling joists on, is it possible to use a single course of engineering bricks on Top of the block work so the joists can sit on that, bare in mind there will be 3 more courses of block's to lay on Top of the engineering bricks. I'm using brick on the outside skin and solid block on the inside with a 100mm cavity. I know I can use concrete commons but I'm struggling to find somewhere local that stocks them. Thanks

Why don’t u cut a few blocks to height required ! Then there is no loss of continuity!

Yes you can run a course of concrete solid brick to raise your joists and most builders merchants should stock the bricks or order them in for you .

Course of engineers will be fine, so long as it is a full “ring” not mix of clay and concrete block. NHBC would recommend course of brick to be below last course of block rather than on top although to be fair either would be acceptable to LA inspectors.

Or you can do a shatter and pour ready mix concrete and rise the hight you need and will be solid and save good luck.
