Do I need a planning permission to replace my garden fence with a hedging?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.08 PM

Hi. I've got this old garden fence in my garden. It was put up around 16 years ago by the previous owner of my house. We want to take it down and replace it with the hedges. One side of the fence is half owned with the council (council house) and they fixed it last time it went down. The lack of the fence will temperarily affect all my neighbours around me while the hedge will need some time to grow. Do I need a planning permission from the council and/or some kind of permission from my neighbours? But again, the fence is mine and I pay for all the repairs. Thank you very much to everyone who can advice. Beata.

No u don't need planning. As long as the hedge is kept below 6ft in height. It is also good manners to notify your neighboring s and. To install a temporary back fence.

Which is it? The fence is half owned by the council.... Or I own the fence? If it’s yours you don’t need permission but if it’s only half yours you need permission from the other owner.

Hi, You do not need planning permission to do this, however, best to speak to your neighbours anyway

Anything rented or not fully owned such as a council house is never black and white. I would always recommend that you seek written approval from the council and your neighbours prior to commencing the removal of the fences in readiness for hedging. That way, should there be any later disagreement or dispute, you have proof of prior approval. Hope this helps.
