Radiator smells when off (like when you bleed them)
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.29 PM
A smell started a couple of days ago around my sitting room radiator, kind of like the smell you get from bleeding them of emptying them. I've bled it, there was no gas coming out. No sign of any leaks or drips but there's a small patch of carpet/underlay/wood floor that smells of it too. No mould or anything. Any idea what could be causing it?

It may pay you to wrap some paper towel around the joints as it may be there is a slight weep from a joint. Monitor and check for moisture check pipes for "pin holes" as it may be erosion or pipe degrading especially if it goes into the floor.
Hope this helps

I agree with the other answers. You could have a very small weep somewhere on the radiator or pipe and valves. Sometimes they are so small you hardly ever notice them. I would place loo paper under the radiator and valve as it so shows the smallest of leaks. Keep an eye on the paper you may find your problem.
Stay safe.

Possible cause of smell could be the seal around the bleed or blank screws at the top of the radiator are starting to perish or become loose allowing gas from inside the the radiator to escape. That would explain the lack of air when bled.
