extending cables in a socket
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM
I'm in the process of changing over the socket plates in my house and after removing one, found that the wiring inside is just too short to reach the terminals on the new socket i want to install. My question is can I use 1.5mm twin and earth cable to extend by a few inches ? I was planning on using wago connectors on the existing 2.5mm cabling and space is tight in the back box.

NO, you cannot use 1.5mm to extend the live and neutral cables. Use 2.5mm.
Use 1.5mm to extend the earth.
Use through crimps to extend the cables, these are smaller and will fit in the back box. Wrap each crimp with insulation tape individually to make sure they are covered properly.

If possible you should replace the cable with 2.5mm T &E
If you use crimps and Single cables, you may end up inducing additional resistance in the circuit and if your cables are not sound, they may create hot spots and weak joints.
