How much clearance is needed around an invented cylinder?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

I am looking at changing combi boiler to a system boiler and wondering where I can fit the cyclinder. I have a cupboard upstairs in my bathroom, and I need to know how much clearance (in cm between the cylinder and the walls) is needed around the cylinder to fit and maintain it? Also, would it be ok to be in a cupboard that opens from the bathroom?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Joanna, A cupboard upstairs that adjoins the bathroom is a good place to install the unvented cylinder. The main provisions that need to be considered when installing the cylinder is getting the discharge to a suitable external wall and the distance to the main hot water outlets. This is because you don’t want to waste too much time waiting for hot water to come through, this is called a dead leg. The gap between the cylinder and wall can be as small as a centimetre providing all the connections are at the front of the cupboard. You can get thinner cylinders that are 475mm wide which may better suit if you are struggling for space. Thanks Kyle

As above You just need to make sure you also have room for the expansion vessel and that the multi valve , tundish and any motorised valves are accessible for visual checks and maintenance

As any qualified engineer will be able to give you the information you requested I would advise you contact one locally so that they could advise you as to whether the proposed location would be suitable as there are more than the clearance factors to think about. An unvented cylinder installation would need to be registered and installed by a competent person

A dead leg is redundant pipework. The consideration is whether you can service it easily should and probably when the need arises
