Wall light to replace cooker hood
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM
Hi, I have the wiring for a cooker hood however I would like to fit a wall light instead of a hood (I have an extract fan which provides the required ventilation requirement). Is it possible to utilise the cooker hood wiring to wire the wall light? It is a Victorian property therefore new cable runs would require raggling. Thank you

Accessories should be installed a minimum of:
100mm horisontally from the edge of a hob.
An accessory should not be located immediately above a hob doe to the possibility of people reaching over suffering burns or the flexible cable of connected equipment being damaged.

It is good practice not to install any accessories within 300mm vertically of the edge of the hob. It would certainly not be advised to put a light above the hob due to heat and steam ingress when cooking.

I wouldn’t use cooker wiring for lighting as it’s overtaxed on the MCB
Also there would be no way of switching it so not advisable to do such thing
Hope this can be of assistance

I agree with others that it does not sound a great idea unless your light is designed for such a location, like that inside most extractors. In terms of whether the electrical supply is ok to use, it’s most likely fine but it should be fused-down to no more that 6A by one means or other.
