Weeds in newly planted grass
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 2.51 PM
I turned over the soil in my back garden and removed as many weeds as I could then put down grass seed. The grass is started to sprout but so are the weeds where I didn't get all the roots out. What is the best product to put down that will discourage the weeds and encourage the new grass growth?

Best to spray area with weedkiller prior to seeding if weeds are present.

Hi,As Jim says, the weeds will come through, initially, they will have a head start as you have used seed for lawn. When the grass seed is established and after a cut or two you can use a proprietary feed and weed to treat the area and eradicate the weeds.
Hope this helps

Totally agree the weeds will reduce once you start cutting the grass.
Despite physically removing the weeds beforehand the ground will contain weed seeds. These are now germinating, like the grass seed on the prepared soil.
Allow the grass 1 year then start a weed and feed programme to remove the stubborn weeds.
