Fan Isolation wire in another room?! Why? Can I move this back?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

The Isolation switch for the extractor fan in our current bathroom is currently in another room. Next to the extractor fan in the bathroom ceiling, there is an existing “pull-cord box” (without pull cord!) with nothing inside it. The wire for this isolator run inside a metal pipe via the loft into another room. I can’t understand why this was done. Would it not make sense to just have the isolator next to the extractor fan, inside the bathroom ceiling?! I wonder if this was the case initially (where isolator was placed where the pull-cord box is currently), but was moved for some reason?! Could anyone explain? I want to move this back to the bathroom, ideally next to the extractor. Is this ok to do so? Does this have to be via the metal pipe again? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

It has to be outside the bathroom so don’t move it back to the bathroom. All to do with electrical regulations which you would be breaching by moving it back.

Hi, the three pole fan isolation switch needs to be outside of the bathroom due to current regulations. Your fan will come on with the light switch and then stay on for a couple of minutes after you turn the light off, this is due to the timer overrun on it, hence the third pole in the isolation switch. This is covered by part F of the building regulations. The old pull cords that were originally installed were only to switch the fans on & off, there was no function for the fan to carry on extracting the steam after you had left the room.

The only switch allowed in a bathroom is a pull cord normally the fan isolation switch is located outside the bathroom usually on the landing

The switch for the extractor fan should be above bathroom door usually if it's a timer run on fan the switch would be triple pole as there is a switch live and a permdant live and neutral
