Adding extra light and switch to existing loop

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

Thanks for your answers, much appreciated! Just to inform you, it was a question I asked to see if it was possible, I have employed a Sparkie to do the work for me but I like to know the options when I commission a job just to ensure that I don’t ripped and I can fairly asses if a job is doable. Sorry if this is a sensible thing to do, I like to understand what is involved. Would it be possible to move the loop to the switch from the rose to add extra light to room to run on independent switch? So it’s two rose two switch one room each switch control only one light?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes it is possible. Take phase from the loop and go to the COM of the new switch. From L1 or L2 of the switch (depends if it is 2 way o 1 way) go to the new light point. Take the neutral from the loop and go to the new light point. Remember that this kind of amend should be written in your electrical certification, so it is better that a certified electrician will carry out the job. You do not need to move the loop to the switchs, switches only control the PHASE. Just tell the sparkie that you want the light point controlled by two switch. He will fit a 2 way switch so you can turn the light point on from 2 different switches. Nothing difficult for a sparkie.

Can’t believe reputable electricians are actually telling DIYers how to mess with electrics. It’s irresponsible and goes against all electrical regs. These jobs need some by fully qualified electricians.

Yes it can be don. its a run of the mill for us electricians . Firstly i would take a permanent live feed the ceiling rose to the existing switch then upgrading the the switch to a 2 way, then loop in a neutral to the new light fitting . Just let the electrician know where you would like the new switch and we are go to go. 2 lights in the same room that come on together from 2 different switches. This job needs to be certificated should be carried out by a qualified elelectrician.
