New flooring over UFH tiles
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.48 PM
Hi, I have a large kitchen/living area 11.5 x 4.5m that's currently tiled with porcelain tiles 440x440mm approx. The floor is heated via UFH (water) and the tiles are laid very well. The screed beneath I am told is 75mm. I don't like the tiles at all, they are grey concrete effect and I'd like to replace them ideally. How much of a large job would it be to take them up? And also what other options do I have available to me?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello. I would say to remove all tiles it will take a week. Up to a week (5 working days)
Because of the floor heating.
Most of the tiles need to be removed by hands to avoid damaging floors heating.
It can be done in two days if not taking care of the floor heating pipes.
This is just how I would do, and how long it will take.
I won't go for any other option.
Only removing old tiles, before new tiles laid down.

The tiles could have a thorough cleaning and then be primed and levelled with quality products, not from DIY centres.
Most floor coverings could be laid over this.
2nd option is to uplift your existing tiles then prime and level.
Please get a proper tradesman to do the work. IT IS NOT DIY

It depends on what flooring you'd like and if the joining rooms floor levels allow underlay and carpet/lino/laminate etc without there being a noticeable step or restricting the doors from being able to open/close after installation. If the levels allow then you can simply tile or carpet/laminate over the top (this is a cheap option if on a budget). However in most cases and this should be expected, you will have to take off the tiles and adhesive layer carefully which if the furniture was already removed should take a day to remove tiles and clear room (will require a small skip or a few trips to the tip). You will most likely require a thin self leveling screed to smooth out imperfections in the surface and allow for drying time. Then you're ready for whatever new flooring you'd like ie tiles, underlay, carpet, laminate etc.

Hi i agree tiles need removed but i recon i could do it in 2 - 3 days taking my time.
The heating pipes are in the 75mm screen so no real chance of damaging them?
A breaker will do it and remove adhesive.
May need a self level depending on finished floor when tiles removed.
Then re tile.
