Noisy fibre glass flat roof on extention

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.48 PM

My fibre glass roof creaks and bangs as it expands and shrinks. Is this normal and can the noise be softened.?.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Normally when these kind of materials is used they should be laid not with a tight fitting but leaving a bit of play all the way around just to avoid these kind of problem. Personally fitted some fibre glass panel and fit to one side with screws into round holes and to slotted hole to the other side so it can expand under the sun. Overall all depends of the fitting system used.

This normally only occurs on Warm fibreglass roofs when fitted incorrectly. An expansion gap is required on the upper deck of 20mm around the wall abutment perimeters. Fixings should be along all joists at 150mm centres and penetrate the joists by 40mm. Straight edged boards should never be used (OSB T&G ONLY).... you can normally see what boards have been used as traditional OSB T&G is 2400x600 whereas straight edged are normally 2400x1200mm All wall fillets, kerbs and drips should be secured with Puraflex PU40 not gripfill. The wall fillets should not be mechanicals secured on the upper edge (only bonded with PU40. Finally if over 100m2 then an expansion joist is required. Tip - on a cold frosty morning put on the heating and you should see the fixing points on the GRP finish where thermal transmission is occurring- you could then pick up any missed (but) you would need to refinish the roof. I would also check the wall flashings first to see that they are not just catching against the brickwork (you may need to lift the lead and check them. KR Drew

Hi. Indeed this is a common issue. Basically it's part of the rigid system, hence why although I'm a registered installer I prefer single ply membrane. Unfortunately unless the osb 3 ply has a 15mm expansion to perimeters and the joins are taped then this problem will continue. I think the only way to remedy would be to remove it and install single ply. Regards Tony.

Fibre glass itself doesn't expand, it shouldn't make noise if done correctly, insulation may help depending on roof type but its hard to say without a picture
