Guttering outside extension

Anonymous user 8 April 2020 - 7.20 PM

I have had a new extension built and as part builders required us to have guttering going around it for part of building control approval. It is plastic guttering that is grated over with metal with loose gravel around. Anyways the guttering i though was going to be for rain water drainage ended up being connected to the kitchen sink and washing machine and from this there is a smell from whatever is being washed and used. On top of this its not really slanted so whatever was washed tends to remain in the guttering instead of flowing away freely until more water is washed down. My question is, is this how it is supposed to be used for, as an open drainage for kitchen water and also there is a gap between the plastic guttering and house where i believe water is going into towards the foundation i am concerned about. The builders i have contacted but they wont come to check until after covid quarantine has cleared up as we have symptoms. so wanted to ask if its allowed for this use.

Usually rain water and foul water can’t be mixed.... what does the building inspector say? As it is his responsibility to make sure it’s correct before issuing a completion certificate... maybe get in touch with building control... hope this helps

no this is an example of very poor plumbing, when you can get building inspector round to look at it and get builder to put it right.

This is a no no! The waste and rainwater drainage should not be mixed and the smell will be because there is no use of a trap from the main drainage.

The rainwater should be on a separate drainage system and is not supposed to be mixed with foul/ waste water, this should be checked and rectified to solve the issue of the foul smell as it will only get worse if moss and debris from the roof causes a blockage.
