Painting & Decorating

Two traders to choose from, but vastly differing estimates of time to complete.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.31 PM

My refurbishment mostly includes removing and replacing 10 internal doors and frames; refurb all skirting boards; add shelving to two storage cupboards; sand walls and paint the entire apartment (705 sqft across a standard 2-bed apartment). Trader A has much more experience in Carpentry and Joinery and estimates the project will take 9 days. Trader B cost £1k more, with all the reviews referring to painting and not carpentry. Trader B estimates 20 days to complete. Any advice on how to tackle this conundrum?

Final result depend of you expectations. High quality tip top work can be more expensive, even 1K. Talk to traders. Some people expect average finish for average price. Some clients want perfect detail finish. Personally I do not work for a poor they cant afford good work- they want Aston Martin for a price of Vauxhall.

Don't give the job to someone who says they will do it all. Employ an experienced joiner to do your doors and skirting. Employ a professional experienced decorator to do the painting.

I would get a third quote. Also get a carpenter to just do the doors and then a painter to quote for the painting . I’m a firm believer if each man to their own trade
