Somebody else's water coming up in my kitchen sink!

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.30 PM

Thats it really. This morning there was a gurgling sound and water started bubbling up in my kitchen sink. It then started filling with somebody else's washing machine water. I had to use a bowl and a saucepan to decant it down my toilet! When I ran my taps the water is going down fine. The water coming up happened three times...prob each time their machine drained. I am in a block on the 2nd floor out of 5. I have now turned my water off at the mains. Is this a problem with my pipes/drains or somebody elses? Many thanks for any help!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I think the problem is because of there is several outlets on the same level from each flat and there might be points where waste pipes are connected together. The outlet water which came out from your sink is blocked, but yours waste pipe is lead to different direction. That is way the water from your taps been draining properly. So I would talk to all neighbours in your level (2) and ask about the problem. I'm pretty sure someone of them needs to clean their waste pipe and than the problem should disappear.

Hi, could be more than one problem, if it’s in a kitchen you might have a different soiled stack run, which could be partly blocked up to your level and in other scenario could be a manhole that’s blocked. You need a people who have a equipment and special gear to do this job , before you call someone to help you make sure they can unblock soiled stacks and manholes. That’s is all , I can advise you from my experience.

Whilst most of the previous answers are plausible, the name thing to do is call the management company to deal with this, as there may be a common issue with others or rubbish stuck inn the drainage pipes. Good luck. Thanks
