Bathroom Fitting

Whistling cold tap

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.30 PM

Hi, whilst we’re in Lockdown I thought I may be able to find the problem to my bathroom sink mixer tap. I purchased the house just 3 months ago so have no history and they did this when we moved in. The problem is that when you turn on the cold tap you get a high pitched scream coming from it and also the hot tap doesn’t work at all. The hot tap will work sometimes when you have the shower on but apart from that there is nothing at all. Thank you in advance of your suggestions. Thank you for you answers. Sounds like I’ll need to change the taps once we can get out of the house! All the best. B

It sounds like you have a hot water tank fed system ( gravity fed ) and a mains fed cold supplywhich is common. You have unbalanced pressured at the basin tap and the high pitch screaming is excess pressure passing by the cold side of the valve. The hot does not work because the tap will be high pressure suitable only. You will need to install a tap that is low pressure only which will usually be a minimum of 0.1-0.2 bar if you source the tap yourself, if using a plumber they will be able to source the correct tap for you.

Have you got gravity system and new modern mono block tap ? If yes problem is with a tap it self as is not designed to work on low pressure systems.

Hi the simple answer to this is that it’s the tap at fault so a new tap will be needed. If you are on a gravity system then you would need to purchase a tap suitable for the system 0.2 working pressure will be fine for the tap. Regards Paul
