Gas Works

Can new services for gas be connected to old pipes

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.30 PM

My landlord has a big building that he separated into flats... The council told him they all needed there own services. Ie gas elec water.. So the road was dug up and new meter installed in my flat..the people left who fitted meter.. In comes landlord diverts pipe back down stairs somewhere and connects to old fittings... I was told that the gas meter had to feed my boiler.. And cooker.. However none of this happened... All connected to old pipes the minute the gas men left... Please tell me that me and my children are safe.. The building is old its grade 2 listed.. So I'm worried pipe work is going to withstand the new gas pipes... I know old pipes are different sizes to new ones... Please let me know if this is safe...

Trying to understand the picture but if your in a flat that had existing pipework to appliances and your landlord has supplied the building with new supplies to accommodate more new flats and yours too Then all should be ok , you’ll have had an inspection done on your flat presumably and the flat will still be subject to an annual landlords certificate

Only a Gas Safe Registered engineer is legally allowed to work on that gas pipework. A registered engineer would have tested the pipework to ensure it was safe. If you are a tenant you are legally entitled to a copy of the Gas Safety Certificate. I suggest you ask for a copy if you do not have one, and check if the work was by someone registered.

A Gas safe Engineer would be able to tell if the old gas pipes is adequate for the new project proposal but for your own piece of mind ask for a copy of the (New Gas Certificate) with or after the work completed and as a tenant you have a legal right as well as the landlord legally binding response for getting a Gas Safe Certificate yearly. Hope this helps....

I strongly recommend that you call the gas board if you have any concerns what so ever. Look on your gas meter. There will be a number that you can call in case of any concerns. Do it! It doesn’t cost you a penny and if your land lord is on the fiddle... he/she should be found out. More importantly... You and your family, could potentially be in danger if he doesn’t know what he’s doing! If your unsure, take action my friend.
