Knotting treatment has ruined my paint job!

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.30 PM

Please help. I had an old pine floor professionally sanded down. I then hoovered thoroughly and applied Knotting to the knots all over the floor. Next day I brushed Primer along the floor (Farrow & Ball wood floor primer). Later I gave the floor a light sand along each board to eliminate any furring. Next day I painted the floor with one coat of Farrow & Ball floor paint. To my despair I realised that all the places i had applied the knotting to seemed to have lowered down into the wood somehow. I mean that you can run your hand over the floorboard and FEEL where the knotting solution was applied. So I have little patches all over the floor. If you stand back and catch it in the right light, you can see this all over my hitherto lovely floor. Husband says I needn’t have bothered with the knotting treatment as it was an old floor but builder said I should use it. I am so gutted as this will still be visible after another 1-2 coats. I’ve tried a light sand down on a test area and a re-paint but still shows. I am so gutted. Why has this happened and what can I do apart from complete re-sand which I cannot afford to do now. Thanks for your help.

Its probley more to do with the knots being a different texture to the rest of the floor and not the knotting. I would recommend trying a fine filler over where the knots are to try and smooth them out. Try it in an area which I'd out the way. Let the filler dry lightly sand it then apply a little primer over the said area

The only thing I could think of without seeing the floor is that you may have used an oil based knotting and a water based floor paint ( as all F&B paints are now ) I'm inclined to agree that the knotting was unnecessary,I hope this helps

Not seeing floor I would have a one stroke brush and a clear knotting from dulux and just touch the knots dry in seconds

To be honest farrow and ball has terrible opacity. Try using another primer and see how that covers before applying your top coats.

sounds like a stain blocker may help? Zinsser Bin aerosol based blocker is good stuff. try re'sanding a knot down to remove paint coat the knot with the primer sand re-coat and sand then repaint hope this helps. JJ'S Maintenance team.
