Changing laminate, no subfloor in small part of living room

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.30 PM

Hi, We recently demolished the vestibule (entryway) in our living room, which had an entrance mat-type carpet fitted in the corner of the room by the front door. The rest of the living room has laminate. We would like to replace the flooring throughout the whole room, including where the doormat carpet was. However, it seems like the corner where the carpet was doesn't have any subfloor and was fitted directly onto the floorboards. The rest of the living room seems to have a 1cm tall (concrete?) subfloor, with underlay and laminate laid on top. How can we level the floor for future laminate installation? Which material should we use to fill the corner (would plywood work?) Many thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there I would suggest plywood to bring the level up and then maybe a cover of feather edge, this is something we as a company can do aswell as fitting the new flooring, thanks

Ply is probably the quickest, cheapest and easiest solution. However subfloor levels are paramount to achieve the best finish as well as making your new floor most durable. As above,I’d recommend ply with a feather finish applied to make sure the two differing subfloors have minimal transition.

Yes, you can screw down plywood to the floorboards. Assuming that the floorboards are standard thickness 20mm, use 15mm longer screw than is thickness of plywood to avoid going through floorboards and hitting pipe work or wires which might be under the floorboards.

Hi there you can either build it up using ply or a self levelling latex compound
