Replacing on/off valves for TRV fittings

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.30 PM

We are in the process of buying a house, on hold obviously at the moment, but are looking to install Hive eventually. I already have most radiator TRVs but the radiators in the house are the old style plain twist on or off. Is it a big job to replace them so that we can fit the Hive smart TRV? I assume the syystem will need draining and then refilling etc. I also have read one radiator needs to be left as is to allow for free flow, is this correct also? Can the pipe work be bought without the actual valves etc? Any Advice? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You would need to drain heating system Change both one side of the radiator valves , personally I would change both sides while system is drained down Then put smart TVs on all rads bar 1

to change the TRV valves you would need to fully drain the system (Heating) then carefully open valve to make sure no water is coming out then undo the bottom nuts to take valves off and replace if doing one side i would do both to be safe and not having to do it again

Easier to have the system drained but can be done without. The radiator in the room where the thermostat is to be located just not have a TRV fitted as this could lead to the hive system not working correctly.

You would need to either drain the heating system or bung it and create a vacuum so no or little water is lost from the system to replace the old with the new. Depending on the system (one pipe or two pipe) will depend if you need one rad to be left without the trv but it would be advised not to install one in the room that the thermostat is in just incase it messes with the system.

when the rads are drained i would also flush them out and put in radiator inhibitor in to help stop lime scale
