Replacing fuses
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.55 PM
Hi, can I replace a 3amp fuse in a fridge freezer with a 5amp fuse? I have no 3amp fuses in the house and mine had just blown for the second time in a few months but I can't afford for a week's worth of food to go off, though I also want to be safe.

It is very unlikely the manufacturer produced this with a 3 amp fuse. The motor in an average domestic fridge is about 1/8th h.p and has a current rating of about 0.5 amps, but on start up it will draw approx 5 amps as a 100 millisecond spike, which blows a 3 amp fuse, domestic fuses are also highly inaccurate and sometimes a 3 amp fuse will not blow until 6 amps passes through it.
Hope this helps . Mike ( trained at LEC refrigeration in Bognor Regis !!)

The reason your fridge is blowing fuses is because it needs 13A not 3 or 5

5amp will be fine but don’t put a 13amp in as that isn’t the correct protection level.
13amp will cover up to 3000w a fridge runs at probably 300 watts or just over
