Damp Proofing

Fill hole to prevent damp where new wall meets old

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.55 PM

We have just completed building a conservatory extension that is connected to an external wall of our old cottage (200yrs). The original wall is made of stone and render. The builder replaced this with mesh and new render as this external wall is now internal. However, as part of the works they later had to dig down approx 12inches outside the conservatory in order to sink some drains. This has meant that some of the newly built external conservatory wall has been exposed at the bottom and we have found a hole between the new wall and the original wall outside. It seems to be just earth there but it’s really quite wet and I did pull out a small section of a plant from under there - the problem is that there is now damp coming through internally. Please could someone advise what to fill the external home with so that it prevents further damp inside and will protect it?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Use a ballast concrete mix at the base incorporating a water proof ad mix, allow to remove all the debris and growth before in filling

You say you have a hole showing earth and moisture getting in. Pics would be best. Sounds like bad building practice. You need to get the builder back to sort this. Kindest regards James

Thinking about this. If damp is evident internally, how has the builder dressed and finished the damp course when it meets the old part of the building. What provision has the builder made for this to stop the damp rising? Mike Cobalt Carbon Free

Have a survey the report will tell what is best in the long run. As you dont want damp problems later if you do it wrong!
