Possible to lay on top of engineered wood?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.55 PM

We’re thinking of something like Karndean for our large kitchen/utility room, and it would be wonderfully convenient if we could put it straight on top of the existing engineered wood floor, which is sound and level (but makes the rooms too dark). Is this a possible/sensible thing to do? We don’t know how the engineered floor is fixed down, but are aware that underneath it the room is half concrete base, half floor boards/joists. If we could do this we’d replace the skirting.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. The easiest solution and least expensive is to ply over the wood flooring then fit the lvt on top. You see that you need to irradiate the chance of the wood flooring expanding and contracting as it normally does because it’s a living breathing material. So the ply lessens this effect it will have on the lvt once stuck to the ply. Hope this helps

Good answer above..irradicate though, rather than irradiate!

Have you considered sanding and re- staining in a lighter colour? Would be a cheaper solution

Hi. I would remove the engineered flooring. Especially if laminate or similar as it isn’t a fixed base. The solid concrete part of the base is fine but the floorboards would need to be covered with a minimum 6mm thick ply of the type recommended by Karndean.

It will be fine if its level and no movement. Just use the recommended underlay and go for it. LVT is very easy to lay and would highly recommend although its quite expensive
