Installing a phone line

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.08 PM

I've just moved into a new flat with a uPVC door. The phone line is, for some reason, completely severed, and needs to be drilled back through the doorframe. However, BT Openreach won't drill the line in for me as this "invalidates the warranty of the door" (I expressed that I don't care about the warranty of the door, but that doesn't change things apparently), so I need someone to come and do it for me. How on earth is this kind of job completed? Do I need to hire a tradesman or is it something I could do myself? Is it possible there's a better way to do this? There is a storage unit attached to the front of the property which the engineer suggested drilling through as an alternative, but the door is currently sealed shut for some reason so I can't even do that at the moment. I can't live somewhere with no internet connection as I'm having to work from home due to the whole coronavirus situation. Please help.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi if you’re not bothered with any guarantees the outer frame of the door that is attached to the building can be drilled with a long series 6mm steel drill bit as close to the brick/block work as possible, that way you shouldn’t hit any of the reinforcement.

You can drill through the frame yourself but do it as far into the corner as you can. If possible you could cut the silicone out and try and feed the cable through, you might have to cut a little bit of the plaster on the inside aswell to make a gap for it to come through. Either way you choose to do it make sure you fill any holes you make with silicone. Hope this helps.

Not a problem if drilled in the right place. But get a fitter to do it. It must be drilled in a curtain place

As other answer says. Quite a simple job. Nice sharp drillbit and close to brickwork should be fine.
