Fuse switches - can they be positioned out of sight?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.08 PM

Can the fuse switches for ovens, extractor hoods, washing machines, under counter lighting be positioned discretely in adjoining cupboards or similar so that they are out of sight? My electrician says I have to have them on the wall - that would make 5 in my kitchen alone before you start counting my power points. I do not particularly want to see orange lights all over my kitchen. Also, he has a fuse switch on the wall to switch a switch on a plug point on the ground for my fridge, dryer and washing machine - surely the appliance plug itself (which is out of sight) would be sufficient. The appliances are not integrated. Re using a multiple a grid switch for all - where would I locate this so it is still accessible but out of sight? Thanks - ABC Electrical - a photo would be great. Thanks for all the answers - fantastic service and a great website too. I now just need to find a way to undo the mess the first electrician has made of my new kitchen with banks of switches above all counters ! Thank you all

You can put them in cupboards, but readily accessible, depends on the situation. The cooker definitely needs one adjacent and accessible for switching off in an emergency. The switches can be purchased without a red light on as the cooker switch can be. Fridge, dryer & washing machine are they integrated units?

They can be hidden, but must be easily accessible. What I do is put the socket in cupboard next to appliance and mount at the top near the front so it cant be blocked by contents of cupboard. Your electrician should have a copy of buildings regs guide for electricians.

Absolutely can have the fuse switches in a cupboard. I would suggest to have them on a grid switch with every switch labelled for each appliance.

The last rewire I did has the consumer unit adjacent to the kitchen I put the switches next below the consumer unit (all individually labelled) If I could upload a photo I would. Have removed phone numbers etc, https://static.wixstatic.com/media/6f4ec1_11ec21a518164c16a9eee8679dd62c6a~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_600,h_559,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/20191209_214159-2.webp
