Electrical

outside socket / full connection to electrics to get power to office / studio at bottom of garden

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hi, I currently have an outside studio /office at the bottom off my garden, at present the electrics are run off a caravan plug socket at side of office and then i run a caravan socket extension lead to the main socket in my house through a window (of course i unplug and wind up when not in use) Obviously this doesnt look the best and is a trip hazard, what type of cost would it be to run if of the main electrics and the work involved? As its done the garden I assume the cables would need running underground. If its a big job to do this then another option would be to run cables under ground from the house to make a waterproof outside socket at bottom of garden. Be great to have some help with this as I'm no electrician and unsure of work involved. After the most cost effective and best method please, thanks for all your help.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

As far as costs go, no idea, as there is so little information, it would have to be looked at and assessed by an Electrician. Think you will need a bit more than a twin socket though. Why not put a request on mybuilder to get some quotes?

Hi RdRichards in answer to your questions what type of cost would it be to run if of the main electrics and the work involved? - hard to say without carrying out a site survey to ensure you are given a fair price As its done the garden I assume the cables would need running underground - the cable does not necessarily have to be buried it could be clipped to a wall or fence line After the most cost effective and best method - cost effectiveness and best method often do not mix in my opinion, below I have detailed how I would quote for a job of this nature which I believe to be the best method A steel wire armoured cable fed from the house consumer unit to a new consumer unit within the studio, I would usually prefer to bury the cable, however if there is a wall running most of the cable route I may liaise with the client on clipping direct to the wall. All final circuits can then be run from the new consumer unit in the studio and any earthing arrangements that may be required can be installed.

You would need a Steel Wired Armoured Cable from the house to the studio, and yes this can be dug into the ground or clipped to wall. Provided that your consumer unit has a spare way and can handle the maximum demand in Amps it is recommended that a new consumer unit is installed inside the studio controlling all circuits within. This makes it safer, easier to maintain, allows additional circuits to be installed and a lot more user friendly.

Depending on how easy it is to get an armored cable to the consumer unit would be the best installation. i would say 6mm armored cable would be more than enough for the run and would give you 32 amps. for cost wise you could dig a trench ready for the electrician to save cost a time of the digging or if you have a fence or wall could be clipped and then a consumer unit in side of studio and break down the circuits into sockets and lights. The other option you have if getting to the consumer unit is not possible without lifting floors ect (if you dont want floors lifted ect) then would be to come off a socket and take a fused spur and fuse the armored cable going to the studio but still put a consumer unit in the studio so you can isolate circuits. Hope that helps. Regards Dan
