Windows & Door fitting

Cockspur metal handle is loose between the handle and the backplate

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

Hi :) I have cockspur metal handles on the windows in my room and they all are loose, which leads to poor isolation. The screws that are fixing the handle to the window frame are not the problem : it is between the handle itself and the metal backplate fixed to the window frame that things are wobbly. There is what looks like a nylon or rubber washer between the two of them so I was wondering if there is a way to change it so that things are sturdier, or any other way to fix this. The handles look almost exactly like this : https://www.pristineprecision.co.uk/ckfinder/userfiles/images/DSCF3658.JPG Thank you for your help :)

Hi I suggest removing the screws holding the handles one at a time and replacing with rivets which should clamp all together and hold tight.

No way of fixing the old worn handles. But you can purchase new cock spur handles online that come with variable stack heights, you can purchase these from security hardware online

When the handles get to this stage of wear the only option is to renew. Make sure you buy the correct step height.

You can buy different sized back sets for cockspur handles to overcome the problem, they are readily available and cost a couple of pounds . Job done 👍

If you can remove the handle you may be able to crimp it up a little. Very often the whole handle mechanism is part of the welded frame and can only be repaired by taking the glass out and replacing/repairing it
