Electric shower upgrade

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM

Is there any point in upgrading my existing triton 8.4Kw to 9.4 or even higher. What is the advantage compared with the cost and upheaval?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In my 40 odd years as an electrician I have never seen the point of it. Others may have a different take on it-including yourself.

Let's put this way. If you drive a 5lt petrol engine car to do 5 miles a day, would you replace it with an 8lt petrol engine car?

If you get a similar size shower there isn’t much upheaval as they will just swap over. And the advantage of a higher kw shower is that you have higher pressure at a certain heat as a 8.5kw shower will run at a lower water pressure than a 9.5kw which In turn will run at a lower pressure than a 10.5kw. So as long as you’ve already got a10ml electric cable for you’re 8.5kw (which you should have?) it’s just the cost of the shower unit and instalment.

Replacing 8.5kw with more powerful. 1. If your breaker at the moment is 32A then you will need to replace it with more power powerful 2. the cable is 6mm, you will need to replace it with 10mm to play safe. But...6mm cable is 47A when installing in the most favourable conditions. So 6mm also could be used, depending on how it is installed 3. 8.5kW rated will have less power and the water will need to pass slower (less pressure) Higher power 10.5kW shower will be able to run at higher pressure at higher temperatures than 8.5kW That's the only difference from my point of view.
