Install new breaker & transfer wiring system to main house
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.28 PM
Had a garage conversion where builder has left job. Had a plug socket already and a light. The electrician added two new sockets off the existing, plus added spot lights. They were supposed to finish by connecting the system to the house and replace one of the breakers on the main unit but didn't. Now the garage system is running off the old system. What would it cost to replace the breaker and run the system to the house unit? Also what would be the cost of then getting a certificate for building regs?

The electricians who did your work should do all the certification. As far as cost goes- impossible to even guess without looking at it.
My edit... please don’t be put off by the other scaremongering answer regarding replacement of consumer units. Plastic construction consumer units are fine if everything is ok with them. It’s not a case of walking into someone’s house and saying oh, you have a plastic consumer unit so it HAS to be changed!

First of all, is it your switch board case in metal or plastic?
If it is in plastic it needs to be replaced with a metal ones due the regulation.
Average cost to replace a 12ways switch board cost between 400 and 500 including the certificate.
You already have the switch so your cost should be less.

If you replace to a new consumer unit then it needs to metal casing. If you are simply just adding a mcb to the original or adding the the circuit to an existing then you don't need to worry about if it's metal or plastic consumer unit.
Post the job on here and a electrician can check it over and sign it off. It's not uncommon for one tradesmen to run the wiring and another electrician to check and sign it off. But at a guess in the dark I would expect a figure of £300 to £500 might be the cost. Good luck with it.

I have 3rd party so i can sign off others but do need to see first fix ideally.cost can only guess without seeing so no point.plastic db fine if no thermal faults providing its in good condition.i would assume entry points probly need attention though.
